Why is Descaling Your Washing Machine So Vital?

Why is Descaling Your Washing Machine So Vital?

It’s obvious, but we wash our dirty clothes in the washing machine to allow us to have nice, clean clothes to wear again. Yet, as your washing machine is used constantly, especially if you have hard water, limescale will begin to build up.

This build-up inside your washing machine will happen in places where you can’t necessarily see it, such as the heating elements, but it can cause a lot of damage.

Limescale can also impact on your laundry, making your clothes feel rough and becoming irritating on sensitive skin.

So, of course, it’s important to give your washing machine a little TLC, especially as it will hugely benefit from it. Read on to find out more about descaling your washing machine, why it is important and how it could benefit you.

What are the Benefits of Descaling Your Washing Machine?

As mentioned above, limescale in your washing machine can cause a range of negative effects, even more so if you live in a hard water area.

When limescale begins to build up on the heating elements within your washing machine, it will make it less efficient. In fact, every millimetre of limescale that covers the elements of your washing machine will reduce the appliance’s efficiency by one grade. That means that with only 2mm of limescale, the A-rated washing machine that you invested more money in to be more efficient, will be reduced to a C.

A more efficient machine will also help you save more money per cycle. So, ensuring your machine has as little limescale as possible will help you to both do your bit for the environment and save important money on your monthly bills.

How Can You Descale Your Washing Machine?

To descale your washing machine, you should;

  • Make sure that your washing machine is empty and that all of the laundries is removed.

  • Open the detergent drawer of the machine and pour the de-scaler into the left-hand compartment.

  • Close the detergent drawer, select the 60°C programme and start the appliance. Let it run until the end.

  • Then, run the same programme again, without the de-scaler. This will thoroughly clean the appliance and make sure that any leftover residue is removed. Make sure to also let this programme run until the end.
