The History Of Cookers

The History Of Cookers

Most people take their cooker for granted, they turn it on, shove some food in and wait until it’s cooked, but it wasn’t always that easy. The standard kitchen cooker you know now has come a long way since it was originally invented, but how did the cooker get to what it is? Most people don’t actually realise how long the cooker has been around, the first glimpse of the future dates back to roughly 29,000 years BC, and this is how the cooker evolved to what it is today….

29,000 BC – Roasting & Boiling pits inside of small yurts were used to cook mammoth in Europe.

20,000 BC – Using food wrapped in leaves they put on top of pits with hot coals covered in ashes and earth.

3,200 BC – Each of the brick and mud mixed built houses in the settlements across the Indus Valley owned an oven, this was still a far stretch off of the oven you are used to today.

Middle Ages – In the middle ages they used fireplaces with brick and mortar hearts with large cauldrons to cook pots of food, although for a while this was mostly just throughout Europe.

1345 – Robert Yeaman invented the oven in order to make the cooking process quicker & easier.

1735 – Francois Cuvillies invented the Castrol Stove which was a stove that contained fire completely and had several openings covered with iron plates with holes so the smoke could escape.

1830 – The date of the invention of the first cooker that could boil, roast & bake from the same heat source.

1882 – A Canadian by the name of Thomas Ahearn invented the electric oven, which would prove to be a huge step forward.

1891 – Shortly after the electric oven we got the electrical stove by the Carpenter Electric Heating Manufacturing Company.

1893 – Despite the most serious economic depression the United States had suffered in its history an electric stove was finally exhibited to the public at the Chicago World’s Fair.

1910 – Gas stoves had just been made easier to clean, making them the most appealing type of stove at the time.

1920s – Electric ovens finally began to compete with Gas Ovens, approximately 40 years after its release.

1940s – An engineer at Raytheon by the name of Percy Spencer discovered the heating qualities of a microwave beam in his radar research project which eventually become the microwave oven.

Present Day – Since then ovens have just begun to continually improve with stainless steel double wall overs, electric ranges and more. There are hundreds of different cooking options today so lucky enough for you there is no need to cook your food on an open fire tonight or in a cauldron.
